I first heard about Virlee when she was in junior high. Our mutual friend, Lee Spencer had told me what a huge Beatles fan she was. In fact, I think there was a story in the paper about how she had gone to some great lengths just to get to Charlotte to watch the film, "A Hard Days Night." Virlee marched to the beat of her own drum. She was a kind woman who will be missed.

I actually helped Virlee fill out those forms for the Beatles contest. She checked everyone to make sure I got her name right. I heard from Eric Welker that she became a big I LOVE LUCY fan. I loved her unique style.

Virlee was one of my best friends at Grimsley and Weaver, and especially in college before she died.  She painted an elaborate water color flower for my senior yearbook.

Do you all remember her VW Beetle?  She painted the interior roof with every single character from the Beatles movie "Yellow Submarine".

Here's a link to a photo of Virlee that Dale Johnson took on one of our many drama fieldtrips.  Who else but Virlee would go on a fieldtrip barefoot!  Notice the twinkle in her eyes and the positive energy in her smile...

I remember the roof of that VW--that was a classic.

Virlee stayed with me for a little while before she died--it was hard to see this vibrant, creative character so unsure of reality or how to deal with it.

I did what I could and it wasn't enough and I have no idea if anything I did or could have done would have made a difference.  It's hard to live in a world that is still learning to deal with physical disabilities and has not yet begun to deal with mental ones.

I wish her peace.

I remember Virlee very well. She was an awesome artist and even allowed me to borrow some of her paints. It hurt to learn of her passing, but I hope she has peace.
